Actor & Model Headshots Compared to Business or Professional Branding

Are Actor & Model Headshots Different Than Business Headshots?
To answer quickly....ABSOLUTELY!
Actor headshots need to display to a casting agent or director your TRUE look and style. They need to be in an industry standard format and size. They need to portray your look without excessive editing or "photoshopping". If you have scars or other facial imperfections...leave them! As a general rule, if the imperfection will still be on your face in 3 weeks, leave it! Of course we can soften or lower the opacity of the imperfection, but never remove it completely. There is nothing worse than a casting agent meeting you in-person and wondering who was that person in the headshot!
This is why it is absolutely crucial to hire an experienced professional photographer who knows how to create the image casting agents are looking for. Your typical casting agent will sort through hundreds of headshots when searching for that perfect look for the role they are casting for. Casting agents can tell if your actor headshot looks like it was taken with an iPhone or by a "shoot & burn" photographer. The composure, lighting and even the size of the headshot will not be of a high professional standard. I had a very well known casting agent tell me that when she sees bad actor headshots it is an immediate "no" because the actor doesn't value his or her craft enough to invest in themselves.
I don't want to giveaway the recipe for my actor headshots, but I can tell you most "portrait photographers" and even Business Headshot photographers think they have the expertise and skillsets required to create a professional actor headshot image...until they try and the actor-client realizes it's just not working.
Just recently, I had an aspiring actor come to my Frisco studio for a professional actor headshot session. He had another photographer take some budget headshot "pics", but he was not getting anywhere with them. I asked to see his current budget headshot and honestly, I couldn't even recognize him from the photo! We had an awesome photoshoot and we created some stunning images!
Here's the feedback from my actor client:
"I just booked a commercial based off of the new headshots. Thank you so much! More to come!"
